Hannover sits squarely on the North German Plain, and its climate tells the truth about that geography. No monsoons, no blistering Mediterranean summers, no alpine extremes. You get a temperate Atlantic rhythm that eases through the seasons instead. Winters stay cold and grey, often glued to freezing for weeks. Summers stay mild, rarely tipping into oppressive heat. Rainfall spreads itself across all twelve months, so Hannover is never bone-dry yet never waterlogged. July tops the chart at 69mm, while April bottoms out at 36mm. If you crave dramatic weather swings, look elsewhere. If you want four distinct seasons and reliable outdoor conditions, Hannover delivers. Humidity is the quiet constant, parked at roughly 70% year-round. In winter, that moisture teams up with low temperatures and short daylight to paint the heavy grey skies North Germany is famous for. Not brutal, just stubborn. In summer, the same humidity feels feels softer. Warm afternoons in Herrenhäuser Gärten or along the Maschsee carry a gentleness southern Europe cannot match. Tree-lined parks make summer the obvious choice for being outside, and temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius suit long walks. Spring and autumn earn their keep as shoulder seasons. April and May feel like the city is rebooting, climbing from 14°C (58°F) to 18°C (65°F) while rainfall eases slightly. Autumn mirrors the climb in reverse. October still offers 14°C (57°F) highs with usable daylight before November slams the door on warmth. Neither season guarantees sunshine. Yet both bring thinner crowds and a calmer city.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
Late April through June and then again in September tend to work well. Hannover's museums, the Sprengel Museum in particular, are year-round draws. But pleasant temperatures in the high teens Celsius mean you can combine gallery visits with time in the outdoor spaces without the summer peak crowds. September offers warm days around 19°C (66°F) with noticeably thinning visitor numbers after the August school-holiday increase.
Adventure
May and June are likely your strongest options. The Eilenriede urban forest and the surrounding Lower Saxony countryside are at their greenest, temperatures are comfortable for sustained activity, and the longer daylight hours give you time to range further before dark. July and August are warmer but also the rainiest months of the year, so you'd want to pack accordingly.
Relaxation
August and early September offer Hannover's warmest and most dependably summery feel. The Maschsee lake becomes a social hub, the outdoor café scene along Lister Meile comes into its own, and highs of 23°C (74°F) make it easy to slow down and enjoy the city at walking pace. Worth noting that this is also peak season, so accommodation books up early.
Budget
The winter months from November through February bring the lowest demand and, so, the most room to negotiate on accommodation. Hannover is a major trade-fair city. When no major fair is running, the city is noticeably quieter and prices drop across the board. January and February are cold (highs around 4-5°C / 39-41°F) but manageable with the right layers, and the Christmas market season in December adds warmth of a different kind to the city centre.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Hanovre.

Year-Round Essentials
a compact waterproof rain jacket
since no month is reliably dry and showers can appear even on otherwise clear July days
a good pair of walking shoes with water resistance
the city is walkable but pavements can be wet
a versatile mid-layer (a light fleece or merino sweater)
works across a surprising range of months, given how quickly temperatures can shift between morning and afternoon
Sunscreen
worth carrying from April through September. The sun in Hannover at that latitude can catch you off guard during clear spells
A small daypack
the city rewards wandering on foot
winter (December through February)
Clothing
a warm outer layer, a proper wool or down coat rather than a fashion jacket, Thermal base layers
Footwear
Waterproof boots with some insulation
Accessories
a hat, gloves
spring and autumn (March through May, September and October)
Clothing
A medium-weight jacket, a couple of adaptable mid-layers
Accessories
an umbrella
Layering Tip
the layering principle matters most. Mornings can feel almost wintry while afternoons warm up enough to shed a coat. Pack smart.
summer (June through August)
Clothing
lighter clothing works well for daytime, the highs of 21-23°C (70-75°F) don't demand anything heavy, a cardigan or light jacket for after dark
Accessories
A compact umbrella
Plug Type
Type F (two round pins)
Voltage
230 volts and 50Hz
Adapter Note
If you're arriving from the UK, you'll need an adapter. Visitors from North America will need both an adapter and a voltage converter for any non-dual-voltage appliances, though most modern laptops, phones, and camera chargers handle the voltage switch automatically. Check the label on your device.
Skip These Items
heavy-duty waterproof trousers (the rain in Hannover rarely warrants them) specialist sun hats designed for tropical climates (the city's latitude means UV levels are moderate at best) a heavy sweater for summer evenings (a light cardigan is sufficient) overly formal footwear, since the city's culture skews comfortably casual and the cobblestones in the Altstadt are unkind to heels
